PR History: Grunig and Hunt's Four Models

There are four models of Public Relations. They were all created by very influential men known as the "Four Fathers of Public Relations.

The first model of Public Relations is known as the 'hype and press agentry' which was created by Phineas Taylor Barnum. P.T. Barnum focused on using a variety of crazy and unusual stunts to attract the most attention. The shock factor gave him a name. An example of this is when paraded elephants and camels over the Brooklyn Bridge to test its strength to show the public that the bridge is safe. This is defientely an event that caught a lot of public attention. In my opinion, this model is a more fun one, considering all of the crazy ideas incorporated into this Public Relations strategy.

The second model of Public Relations was created by Ivy Lee, called 'facts and info'. His idea was to investigate stories and only report the hards facts regarding the event. There was an event that he reported that got published in the New York Times that only consisted of truthful events.

The third model of Public Relations is known as 'scientific persuasion' and was created by the famous Edward Bernays, who is known as the "Father of Modern PR". His strategy was to discover what the problems in society were and use that. He mainly focused on the using the women equality reformations to his advantage by advertising something useful for them. His strategies proved to be effective which made his PR name justified.

The fourth and final model of Public Relations is known as 'mutual understanding' which was created by Arthur W. Page. This model focused on maintaining healthy connections between organizations. This allowed the companies to work together with each other with little to no issues. This model ensured that both the needs of the company and clients were fulfilled. Communication is key within this type of Public Relations.

All of the models described above proved to be very effective and have shaped the Public Relations community and have impacted the entire industry for the better.
